What is Homœopathy?
Homœopathy is an energy medicine that helps the body to do its own healing.
The symptoms of disease are the outward expression of disharmony within the whole person. Homœopathy recognizes that it is the patient as a unique individual who needs treatment not the disease and is thus a truly holistic therapy.
How does it work?
Unlike conventional medicine which acts on the physiological processes of the body, Homœopathic remedies act by stimulating the body's own healing process. There are no `side effects'. Homœopathic remedies are not accumulative sometimes just a single dose is sufficient to stimulate the body's healing powers.
The Homœopathic consultation
A first appointment will last a minimum of one hour. Follow-up appointments can be from two to eight weeks apart to begin with, and last approximately half an hour.
The same amount of time is needed for children, however small. During this time
you will be asked about present signs and symptoms plus a detailed medical history
of yourself and your immediate family. Homœopathy works by matching the symptom
picture of a remedy with the symptom picture of the patient 'like cures like'
as Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of Homœopathy, described it.
Everything that happens in the consultation is absolutely confidential, and information is never disclosed to anyone unless the patient gives permission. In order to gain a complete picture of the patient I will need to know about any of the following:
- any major illness, accidents, vaccinations or emotional traumas that have occurred during your lifetime
- any recent or intended dental or hospital treatment or investigation e.g. x-rays, scans
- any prescription or self-prescribed medication (including creams and Homœopathic remedies) you are currently taking or use occasionally antibiotics, antihistamines, hydrocortisone cream, Calpol etc.
- any other therapies you use, such as osteopathy, physiotherapy, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, aromatherapy, Bach flower remedies etc.
Homœopathic remedies are mainly made from natural products from the mineral, vegetable and animal kingdoms. In the case of remedies made from animal sources this is usually from the venom, or from part of a single specimen of the species. which makes up the mother tincture of the remedy. The mother tincture then undergoes a repeated process of dilution and succussion, known as potentization, which allows even poisonous substances such as Arsenic to become harmless, and which enhances the medicinal properties of the remedy. Homœopathic remedies are safe for use during pregnancy and by babies and children. The remedies are tested (proved) on healthy humans no animal testing is employed.
Homœopathic remedies will not interfere with any orthodox medication you may be taking. Conventional medication may, however, interfere with the action of Homœopathic remedies.
Remedies are usually given in the form of a sugar pillule, which is allowed to dissolve in the mouth, but may also be given in tablet or liquid form. Nothing else should be taken for fifteen minutes before or after a remedy, including food, drink (including water) and toothpaste. Precise directions for taking remedies are given at each consultation.
Remedies should never be touched by hand. Tip the pill straight from the packet into the mouth. Store remedies in a cool, dark place away from smells and strong light. Keep them in the packet in which you receive them. Never re-use a discarded packet for another remedy. Never let remedies pass through an x-ray machine (airports) or leave them on or near electrical appliances.
After the remedy
The response to a remedy may take one of several forms. Among the most common physical responses, that may at first seem irksome, are a cold, diarrhoea, nasal or urethral discharge and skin symptoms. Or you may experience the return of old symptoms physical, psychological or emotional that you may have forgotten or felt had been cured. You may, or course, feel exceptionally well and optimistic!
How many treatments will I need?
A second appointment will usually be made for one month following the initial consultation. Its aim is to assess the treatment and decide if further prescriptions are necessary.
Chronic conditions such as asthma, hypertension, indigestion, skin problems etc. vary in their responsiveness to treatment usually depending largely on the patient's vitality. In most circumstances, however, one can expect changes to begin with one to three months of the initial consultation.
Everyday illness and acute situations
During Homœopathic treatment you may experience acute illness such as sore throats, coughs, colds and 'flu. Please speak to me before taking any medication, be it conventional or Homœopathic.

... from The Organon
In the state of health, the spirit-like vital force animating the material human organism reigns in supreme sovereignty ... The reasoning spirit who inhabits the organism can thus freely use this healthy living instrument to reach the lofty goal of human existence.
